Back translation involves translating a previously translated document back into the original source language. The back translation is carried out by a translator who has no prior knowledge of the original text, and stylistic improvements are typically not made during this process.

Many companies, especially pharmaceutical companies conducting clinical trials, require back translation in order to check the documents have been accurately translated into the target language since even the smallest of errors can pose huge problems in this field.
